  1. Road Traffic Accident at Tooting Broadway, Monday 15 June 2015

    There was an accident at Tooting Broadway today, Monday 15 June 2015. A cyclist was hit by a lorry at the Tooting High Street and Garratt Lane corner (in front of Halifax Bank) around 3pm. The bike was crushed under the wheel of the lorry and the cyclist, a man in his 40s was rushed to nearby St George’s Hospital with abdominal, pelvic and lower limb injuries by the London Ambulance service who treated him at the scene.   2. Men Charged with Murder following Incident at Welham Road, Tooting

    Mr Peter Lee, aged 75 of Welham Road, in Tooting, has died following an incident in his garden at his home on 1 June 2015. Local witnesses reported how some men had driven a 4x4 vehicle into his garden through a fence to settle a score with his sons. Peter was said to have tried to then intervene in a fight between his 2 adult children and the 3 other men and the men rammed him against the wall with their car leaving him bleeding on the floor. Peter Lee who was seriously injured died shortly afterwards and a post-mortem examination held on Tuesday 2 June 2015 at St George's Hospital gave cause of death as severe head injury. Three men were arrested in connection with the incident and charged with murder. The men have been named as Jason Lewin (aged 33 of Glenthorpe Road, Morden) and John Palmer (aged 30 of Green Wrythe Lane, Sutton) and Stuart Palmer (aged 28 of Hounslow).   3. Legal Action to be Taken against Local Man Following Large Flytip on Tooting Graveney Common

    Wandworth Council have announced that they are taking legal action against a local man who's waste and refuse, consisting mostly of building material and rubble, was found dumped on Tooting Graveney Common close to Furzedown Drive yesterday (Wednesday 3 June 2015) in a huge flytip measuring some 80m length. Evidence giving a local resident's name and address on the items strewn over the common had been found within the rubbish. The rubbish was promptly cleared away by the council today.   4. Incident at Welham Road in Tooting, 1 June 2015

    Police were called to reports of a fight at a residential address on Welham Road in Tooting at Monday 1 June 2015, 4.51pm where they found the home owner, aged 75, had received injuries consistent with being hit with a vehicle. A number of people fled the scene in a vehicle which was subsequently stopped by police in Louisville Road, Tooting Bec. Two men, who had sustained minor injuries, were arrested in connection with the incident. Police are continuing to look for a third man who was believed to have been involved and got away. Wandsworth CID are investigating and anyone who witnessed the incidents in Welham Road or Louisville Road, or has any information, is asked to contact Wandsworth Police on 101 or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.   6. St George's Hospital Site in Tooting found to have the most False Fire-Alarm Callouts to London Fire

    An analysis by the London Fire Brigade has found that the St George's Hospital site in Tooting had the highest number of false fire alarms callouts to them in the whole of London. The fire brigade is concerned that false fire alarms cause complacency when they go off. So if there is a real fire people may ignore the alarm. St George's are looking to make improvements to how they handle fire alarms and are working to update all 5,500 fire sensors across the site over the next 3 years at a cost of Ł4m.   8. Police Decide Not to Act against Sadiq Khan following Allegations of Mobile Phone use in Car

    The police have decided to take no action against Tooting MP, Sadiq Khan, due to insufficient evidence following allegations that he had been looking at his phone whilst driving. Conservative MP for North Swindon had reported the matter to the police following the publication of a slightly blurry photo on the Guido Fawkes’ blog which allegedly showed Sadiq Khan looking at his phone whist driving.   9. Homeless Mother who Buried Baby Alive on Tooting Commons Tried at Old Bailey

    The case of Elita Amantova, a mentally-ill homeless Latvian lady who is thought to have buried her new baby alive somewhere within of one of the two Tooting Commons was heard at the Old Bailey today, Friday 5 December 2014. The court heard the lady who was suffering from a Schizophrenia-type mental-illness had come to work in the UK in 2008 but having lost her job she ended up in the company of criminals in Norfolk who forced her to work as a prostitute. However she managed escape to London and by August 2012 she was known to have been heavily pregnant and living rough at Streatham Cemetery on Garratt Lane in Tooting surviving on foraged berries and bread that locals in Tooting had thrown out for birds. She gave birth alone and buried the baby shortly afterwards, thought to be somewhere on one of the Tooting Commons. Parts of the legs of the baby were then dug up by foxes and carried to a tractor yard just off Dr Johnson's Avenue in the Tooting Commons area where they were discovered by a council worker on 10 September 2012 and a criminal investigation was begun. A week later the lady was arrested outside a supermarket in Garratt Lane and subsequently went on to admit that she had buried the baby whilst it was still alive. Elita Amantova, aged 39, pleaded guilty to infanticide and admitted causing the death of her child by burying the newborn baby alive while she was mentally disturbed but she denied a charge of murder. The court accepted her not guilty plea due to her mental state. Infanticide, which she admitted to, covers killings where mothers' minds are disturbed having not fully recovered from giving birth.     Metropolitan police have charged Elita Amantova, a 38 year old woman of no fixed abode, with murder in relation to the baby's legs found within dustbins located in Tooting Bec Common in September 2012.   17. Sticker Bandits Target Tooting Bec Homes

    There has been a big problem with small advertisement stickers being stuck to commercial premises in Tooting but the problem seems to have now spread to homes. A number of Tooting Online forum members have reported such stickers being stuck to their homes in Tooting Bec and Wandsworth Metropolitan Police have advised that residents should remove such stickers and report it to them as they think that this could possibly be a way for burglars to mark out homes to target.   18. Tooting Bec Common Trashed by Travellers

    A convoy of travellers caravans and cars illegally invaded Tooting Bec Common this week. They were made to move on by the local police and council, as has happened numerous occasions in recent times, but on this occasion they appear to have left a trail of devastation the likes of which have never been seen on the common. Many tonnes of rubbish including builders waste has been dumped onto a natural wooded habitat area of the common. This is expected to cost thousands of pounds to clear up.   19. Changes to Policing in Tooting with the Introduction of the Local Policing Model

    Local policing in Tooting is changing with the Wandsworth Metropolitan Police implementing the Local Policing Model (LPM) on Monday 16 September 2013. Merton Metropolitan Police has already implemented the Local Policing Model in the parts of Tooting SW17 within the Borough of Merton on Monday 8 July 2013. Broadly speaking this new model of policing will see 3 local policing areas (LPA) being introduced across a borough, covering a number of Safer Neighbourhood Team areas, with each local policing area being looked after by a dedicated police inspector. The main difference with the Local Policing Model will be that it will make it easier for police to move around between different wards / safer neighbourhood team areas within a LPA instead of being confined to their own specific area.     Wandsworth Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the Tooting Designated Public Place Order (DPPO), also commonly referred to as the Tooting Alcohol Free Zone by Wandsworth Council, was reviewed at the end of its one year trial period (30 July 2013) and will now carry on indefinitely until it is rescinded.   22. Tooting Police Station Now Only Open Three Hours per Week to the Public

    As of this week Tooting Police Station is now only open to the public for just 3 hours per week as a contact point for non-emergencies. The hours are Wednesday 7 - 8pm, Thursday 7 - 8pm and Saturday 2 - 3pm. The reduced hours were implemented as a result of the recommendations given in a policing report, which had been recently published on the 25 March 2013. The same report also stated that the current Tooting Police Station, a big Art Deco building, was far too large so it will ultimately be closed and relocated.   24. Policing Plans say Tooting Police Station to Relocate and the Current Site to be Closed

    Following a public consultation the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, announced the final Crime and Policing Plans for London today (25 March 2013). The plans say that the Tooting Police Station is too large for longer term policing needs and ultimately the current site will have to close and relocate to smaller premises. The station will at present continue to be used for operational purposes by the police. The front counter will however be closed for regular day time use by the public but it will be open for 3 hours a week as a non-emergency contact point for local people, from both Wandsworth and Merton.   25. A Public Meeting Regarding Changes to Local Policing for Tooting was Held on 26 February 2013

    A public meeting to discuss changes to local policing including the proposals to close Tooting Police Station’s public counter was held at Wandsworth Town Hall on Tuesday 26 February 2013. The meeting was attended by over 100 people including Tooting MP, Sadiq Khan, and it was lead by the Mayor of London. They said that the idea behind the changes was to have more police and fewer buildings and to reduce the number of 24 hour counters to just one per borough.     Gloria Knowles, a grandmother aged 71, who worked at Harringtons Pie and Mash Shop on Selkirk Rd in Tooting, has died as a result of an attack by her daughter’s five dogs in Morden. This occurred on the evening of Tuesday 30 October 2012 and the dogs have now been removed from the home by police. Mrs Knowles' family have run Harringtons in Tooting for several generations.     A man crossing the Upper Tooting Road (A24), near Tooting Bec Underground Station, was hit by a lorry and fatally injured around 11am today. He was pulled beneath the wheels of the lorry and decapitated, so must have died instantly. This accident was witnessed by many local workers and pedestrians.   35. Man Arrested for Thefts from Tooting Leisure Centre

    Police from the Tooting Safer neighbourhood teams have arrested a 20 year old man from Essex after members of the public using Tooting Leisure Centre reported personal items being stolen from their lockers.   36. Arson Attack on Tooting Hindu Temple's Ceremonial Chariot

    A chariot, worth Ł100,000, that belongs to the Sivayogam London Muthumari Amman Kovil hindu temple in Tooting was attacked by four arsonists on 16th November 2011 leaving it very severly burnt and essentially unrecognisable. The chariot had been used for the last 10 years in a Bank Holiday procession which used to make its way down the main roads of Tooting up to Figgs Marsh and back again.
